From mutual aid societies to independent fugitive communities, and from farmer cooperatives to consumer co-ops, Black communities have long worked together to build economic independence and improve each other’s lives in tangible ways. This Black History Month, and every month, we celebrate the Resilience, Ingenuity, and Black Excellence that have fueled these movements. Professor Jessica Gordon Nembhard details how these cooperative efforts thrived despite racism and active sabotage, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire collective empowerment today.

🫶🏽This week, we donated our old bulk bins to the Elkhart County Humane Society, where they can potentially be repurposed for food storage—because every little bit helps when it comes to caring for animals in need.

📦We also dropped off the community donation box filled with food and supplies, thanks to the generosity of our incredible co-op members. We even had the chance to visit some of the sweet animals looking for their forever homes!

🐶Laszlo stayed home this time—it would have been a bit overwhelming for him— but he sends a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed.

ABOUT
Nathan Hooley grew up on his family’s farm and knew from an early age that he wanted to pursue farming. At just 14 years old, with the support of his family, he began growing organic produce on several acres of their land and selling it at farmers markets. Today, he and his wife, Emily, continue to expand the farm’s offerings, increasing the variety of fruits, vegetables, and proteins available.

At Ridge Lane Farm, all fruits and vegetables are grown using organic practices. In adherence to organic guidelines, the farm avoids chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and weed control, as well as genetically modified organisms. Cover crops are used to nourish soil life, fix nitrogen, and suppress weeds.

Their dedication to sustainable farming helps strengthen the local food system, and they appreciate the support of those who value fresh, responsibly grown food.

🥬🍠🍳Why serve plain eggs when you can cook up a sizzling plateful of colorful veggies to serve with them? Start your day with this savory saute with a touch of smoky chipotle flavor.

💚Kale & Sweet Potato Breakfast Skillet💚

Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
1 medium sweet potato, cubed
3 kale leaves with stems removed, chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs
Toast (optional)

Preparation
Preheat oven to 375 F. Place a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Drizzle in the olive oil, then add the onion and stir. Cook, stirring frequently, for about two minutes.
Add the red bell pepper and sweet potatoes, stir and then cover the pan. Reduce the heat to medium low and cook for about five minutes, covered, until the sweet potatoes are tender. Uncover and stir in the kale, sprinkle with chipotle pepper, sage and salt, and raise the heat to medium-high. Stir for two minutes.

Make four evenly spaced indentations in the kale mixture in the pan, then crack an egg into each one. Place in the oven and bake for five to seven minutes, until the eggs are done to your liking. Check the doneness with a paring knife prior to removing from the oven.

Serving Suggestion
Serve with a side of your favorite breakfast protein or fruit along with a cup of fair trade coffee or tea.
